2 Prong Drive Centre

No 1 Morse taper  ( MT 1 )

5/8" diameter head

Made By Record Power Ltd - Sheffield - England

Fits any lathe with a morse taper 1 fitting

A 2 prong drive is ideal for turning green timber or wood that is out of balance wood, the 2 prongs gives deeper penetration and better holding power than a 4 prong drive.

A good tip when using a 2 Prong drive is to mark the centre of the wood using a centre finder, then put the prong drive on this centre mark, give the drive a sharp tap with a mallet,  rather than trying to tighten up using the tailstock. (we have centre finders listed in our Ebay Shop and they are shown below for information). You can also use a 2 prong drive for off centre turning, its basically simple, but it does take a little practice. Mark your centre point as normal, but tap the prong drive into the wood slightly "off centre" now turn part of the wood as normal, then re fit the drive on the "normal" centre point and then turn some parts of the workpiece again. The effects can be stunning, have a practice of on some pieces of wood.

These chucks are all brand new and boxed and originaly sold for £27.00 plus Vat

We have sold 1000s of these excellent chucks.

I have used one of these chucks myself for many years on both my Harrison and Axminster lathes and found them to be well made, solid and reliable.   I have written below some information on chucks and Morse tapers that may be of interest.One of the things that confuse many people is the Morse taper, how it works or simply what size Morse taper they need for their own lathe. I have written below a few brief notes to try and help, but If have any questions then please ask.

What is a Morse taper? The Morse Taper is the "  hollow tapered hole" found in the centre of the Headstock and in the Tailstock of Lathes (as well as some Pillar drills and Milling machines) made to common diameter sizes with a universally recognised tapered profile. Morse Tapers come in eight sizes. The taper size is normally identified by a single digit ranging from 0 to 7  (0 being the smallest) which is normally just abbreviated to the letters "MT", so a MT2 is a Morse Taper Number 2.  It is fairly easy to identify which MT you need by simply measuring the hole diameter in your tail stock. The approx Morse Taper hole sizes are listed below.

MT1 = 12mm    MT2 = 18mm   MT3 = 24mm  (MT1 & MT2 being the most popular).

Whilst there are other tapers, these are very rarely found on lathes.  Of these "other tapers" the most common is a Jacobs taper which is normally only found on Pillar drills. The fitting (the hole) in the back of the chuck is called the "short taper" and these vary enormously. Our chucks have the common (and most popular) fitting called B16. The B16 is the Metric DIN taper number. The dimensions of the B16 "short taper" are 15.73mm taper to 14.50mm with a taper length of 24mm.

How does a Morse Taper work? Lathes, by their nature, operate in a rotary manner and normally a rotating workpiece comes into contact with a fixed tool, i.e. a drill bit held in a drill chuck held in the tailstock. The chuck must be held firmly in place, properly centred in line with the axis of rotation, but also able to be quickly and simply removed. The best way of achieving this was found to be using a tapered metal bar (similar to a ice cream cone with the top cut off) fitted into a hollowed tapered hole (or sleeve) in the head or tail stock. The large tapered surface area of the cone holds the shaft very securely in place through friction; hence the invention of the Morse Taper was born (invented 1864 by A. Morse). The Morse Taper is now  universally accepted as the standard Machine Taper used throughout the world.We also have these Chucks available in MT2 and listed in the tools section of our Ebay Shop, If you are not sure what size just let us know and we can help.All items shown are listed in our Ebay ShopCentre FinderFor WoodturningClear - high impact plastic construction Locate centres of spindles prior to lathe mountingPerfect for lathework and other craft uses

This is must have tool for every woodturner, it's a simple, quick and effective tool to find and mark the centre point of round, hexagon or square stock up to approx 8" in diameter  (hexagon up to 5 3/4" )  As a woodturner myself,  I use this centre finder for marking the centre point to locate my live centre or screw chuck.  I also find this tool useful for marking out a bowl blank, (I drill the central point using a forstner bit to fit my chuck jaws) and also use it to mark where to screw on a face plate. In terms of waste wood when roughing out, this makes the centre finder a cost effective tool, and more importantly makes the wood safer to turn as the wood will be more centrally balanced.

To use: Place the center finder over the end of the wood, mark a line, then rotate the center finder approximately 90° and then mark a second line. The intersection of crosshairs of the two lines will define the centre of the work piece

Liberon Tack ClothsPack of 10 Cloths Use it whenever there is dust in your home, car, workshop, etc.Resin impregnated cloth is ideal for removing dust and lint from any surface prior to staining, waxing, lacquering, French polishing or colouring.Can be used and re-used many times over.Wax and silicone free.

Liberon tack cloths are excellent for removing dust from all surfaces. Although mainly use these myself when woodturning - prior to applying sanding sealer, stains or finish coats.  I have found that if you don’t use a tack cloth then you just trap microscopic dust particles under your final finish and spoil the overall finish on close inspection. Whilst you can use a damp cloth to remove dust, a damp cloth will raise the grain slightly, which you need to sand back down and this defeats the purpose.

These Tack Cloths each come in their own sealed plastic bag, so you only use one cloth at a time and the rest stay fresh. Each cloth is reusable time and time again, I put it back in the bag after use to stop it gathering dust and one tack cloth will last me a long time.
